Labour Under Fire as Cost of Living Pressures Grow Amid Ongoing Chaos

The UK Labour government is facing fresh criticism over rising cost of living pressures, as political controversy continues to dominate attention at Westminster.

The SNP said the government is failing to focus on the issues affecting households, including fuel, food and energy costs.

The comments come amid ongoing scrutiny surrounding the Peter Mandelson controversy.

The party pointed to action taken in other countries, including Ireland, where fuel duty cuts and financial support packages have been introduced.

It said similar measures have not been delivered by the UK government, with calls for intervention to reduce household costs.

Dave Doogan MP said:

“The Labour government is consumed by constant chaos and distracted from the issues that matter, including the cost of living, which has soared under the Labour Party.

“While Ireland, and other independent countries, are laser-focused on cutting fuel duty and delivering financial support for families worth hundreds of millions, the Labour Party is busy firefighting another scandal of its own making, as Keir Starmer defends the indefensible and desperately tries to save his own skin by blaming everyone else for his own bad judgement.

“The Prime Minister should have resigned months ago for his shameful role in the Peter Mandelson scandal.

“While Westminster is wrapped up in process, the simple fact remains Keir Starmer chose to appoint Mandelson despite his long history of scandals and despite knowing he maintained his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, the world’s most notorious pedophile.

“This cycle of constant chaos is unsustainable.

“The Labour Party is fiddling while Rome burns and damaging the interests of families across these isles by keeping Starmer in post.

“Families need a government that is fully focused on the cost of living emergency, like John Swinney’s SNP government is in Scotland.

“The SNP has called for the Labour government to help households immediately by removing VAT from fuel for the duration of the crisis, scrapping its planned hike to fuel duty, and introducing a Household Energy Price Cap, which would lower bills by hundreds of pounds.

“But instead of acting, the Prime Minister is limping from one crisis to another, leaving millions of families in the lurch.

“Keir Starmer’s position is untenable.

“His appalling record of bad judgements and broken promises has fatally undermined public trust.

“It’s not in anyone’s interests for him to remain in post.

“If he won’t go of his own accord, voters in Scotland can show him the door on 7th May by voting SNP to sack Starmer and secure a fresh start with independence.”

The issue of cost of living support remains central to the political debate ahead of the election.
