Ariane Burgess MSP, Scottish Green MSP for the Highlands & Islands, has warmly welcomed the Scottish Government’s announcement of up to £28 million in funding to replace the aging Corran Ferry with a new electric vessel.

This significant investment, part of the Inverness & Highland City Region Deal, will ensure the continuation of this vital service, which is crucial for the communities of Ardgour, Sunart, Ardnamurchan, and beyond.

Ms. Burgess has been a steadfast advocate for the replacement of the Corran Ferry, consistently raising the issue in the Scottish Parliament.

She has submitted two written questions and included the issue in debate speeches to highlight the ferry’s importance and the urgent need for its modernisation.

In addition to her parliamentary efforts, Ms. Burgess has engaged with Highland Council, advocating for the ferry’s replacement and ensuring that the voices of local communities are heard.

This funding will not only provide a reliable and sustainable ferry service but also support the region’s economic growth and environmental goals.

“I am delighted with today’s announcement,” said Ms. Burgess.

“The new electric Corran Ferry will be a game-changer for our communities, providing a dependable service that supports local businesses and residents while contributing to our environmental targets.

“This funding is a testament to the hard work and collaboration of all stakeholders involved.”

The new ferry will replace the current diesel-powered vessels, significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.

The project also includes substantial investments in shoreside infrastructure, funded by the UK Government and Highland Council, ensuring a comprehensive upgrade of the ferry service.

Kate Willis, Scottish Green Councillor for Fort William and Ardnamurchan said:

“Highland Council, councillors and our MSPs have worked hard to come up with a sustainable solution to resolve the challenge that our ageing ferries running the route – the busiest in Scotland – brings.

“I hope we can deliver the new ferry as quickly as possible now that the funding streams have been finalised.”

Ms. Burgess added:

“I want to thank everyone who has supported this cause, from my colleagues in the Scottish Parliament to the dedicated members of Highland Council, particularly local councillor Kate Willis. and the local communities.

“Together, we have achieved a milestone that will benefit our region for generations to come.”
