Ariane Burgess, Scottish Green MSP for the Highlands and Islands, welcomed the commencement of hearings by the Planning Reporter into the decision to grant planning permission for a golf course at Coul Links.

This marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to protect this unique and environmentally significant site.

Ms Burgess has been a vocal advocate for the preservation of Coul Links, a site renowned for its rich biodiversity and environmental importance, and highlighted the overwhelming response from the community and environmentalists to the plans, with over 4,500 calls for the proposals to be called in submitted through an e-campaign she initiated.

Commenting as the second day of hearings neared its close, Ms Burgess said:

“Coul Links is a spectacular site of environmental significance, home to a variety of species and protected by several international environmental designations.

“The hearings, which include a public event on 14 November, will provide a platform for local residents, environmental groups, and other stakeholders to voice their concerns and present evidence.

“This is the second time the local community and environmental groups have had to fight against proposals for a golf course on this land.

“The local planning officers recommended refusal of the plans, and it is deeply disappointing that these concerns were initially overlooked.”

Ms Burgess also pointed out the broader implications of the proposed development, including its potential impact on local demographics and the economy.

“Communities in Sutherland are rightly concerned about population decline, but the answer lies in creating sustainable jobs and housing, not in the low-paid, seasonal work that this development would offer,” she stated.

The MSP’s commitment to preserving Coul Links is echoed by the sentiments of local residents, who cherish the landscape for its natural beauty and ecological value.

Ms Burgess added:

”As one local resident stated in their submission – Coul Links enriches lives and refreshes the soul – an asset that decades of economic wealth could not afford to buy.”

As the hearings proceed, Burgess remains hopeful that the Planning Reporter will recognise the importance of protecting Coul Links for future generations.

“We must listen to the voices of those who know and love this land.

“Their dedication to preserving Coul Links is truly inspiring and underscores the need for thoughtful, sustainable land management practices.”
