A groundbreaking decision has been made for the future of education on Mull, with Tobermory South selected as the preferred site for a new £43 million 2-18 campus.
The choice promises substantial benefits for the island, including modern educational facilities, increased accessibility, and a long-term economic boost.
Councillors confirmed that the new campus would be situated less than a mile from the current high school, ensuring minimal disruption to students and staff while bringing an economic gain of over £3 million to the island.
With no significant changes to travel times or carbon emissions, the location offers a balance between progress and practicality.
This project represents Argyll and Bute Council’s largest single investment, reflecting a commitment to high-quality education and community development.
The new campus will enhance learning experiences by offering state-of-the-art facilities, access to specialist staff, and expanded opportunities for vocational training, apprenticeships, and flexible learning pathways.
Sport and leisure amenities will also be upgraded, making the site a hub for both education and community engagement.
With Mull’s population of around 3,000, including 178 secondary school pupils, the campus is set to provide a much-needed boost in infrastructure and opportunity.
Currently, the majority of primary and early learning pupils on the island attend school in Tobermory, making the selected site a logical and accessible choice.
Community involvement has been integral to the decision-making process, with input gathered through online surveys, drop-in sessions, and dedicated working groups.
The Scottish Government has acknowledged the council’s thorough and forward-thinking approach, praising its commitment to transparency and fiscal responsibility.
Councillor Audrey Forrest, Policy Lead for Education, acknowledged the complexity of the decision but emphasised the need to prioritise young people and the future of Mull.
She recognised that differing community opinions made the process challenging but stressed the importance of ambition and realism in delivering the best outcome for education on the island.
She highlighted the opportunities a new, modern campus would bring, from enhanced learning experiences to economic growth, reinforcing the importance of community collaboration as the project moves forward.
With the preferred site now confirmed, the next step is the preparation of a business case, with further opportunities for public consultation and feedback.
