Man Jailed for Historic Sexual Offences Across North East and Sutherland

A man convicted of a series of sexual offences carried out over more than a decade across the North East of Scotland and Sutherland has been sentenced to an Order of Lifelong Restriction.

Paul Patrick, 61, was sentenced at the High Court in Edinburgh on Wednesday 27 May after previously being found guilty of multiple offences last year.

The offences took place between 2008 and 2023 in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Sutherland and involved children and two adult women.

Patrick was convicted of a range of offences including serious sexual crimes following proceedings at the High Court in Edinburgh.

The court imposed an Order of Lifelong Restriction, meaning Patrick will remain under strict supervision for the rest of his life, alongside a minimum prison term of eight years and six months.

Police Scotland said the case involved a sustained pattern of abuse carried out over many years.

Detective Inspector Kerry McCombie from the North East Division Public Protection Unit said:

“Patrick believed he was above the law, carrying out a sustained pattern of abuse over many years, but he will now face the consequences of his despicable actions.

“I want to recognise the strength shown by the victims in coming forward and supporting the investigation.

“I hope this outcome provides them with some sense of justice and reassurance.”

Police Scotland also reiterated that investigations into sexual abuse offences remain a priority regardless of how much time has passed since the crimes were committed.

McCombie added:

“Police Scotland remains committed to supporting victims of sexual abuse and bringing perpetrators to justice, no matter how much time has passed.

“I would encourage anyone who has experienced or experiencing abuse to report it.

“You will be listened to and supported.”

Anyone affected by sexual crime can contact Police Scotland on 101.
