Cairngorm Mountain is preparing for a fresh chapter with the appointment of outdoor adventure specialist Mike Gifford as its new chief executive.
Mr Gifford will take the reins of Cairngorm Mountain (Scotland) Ltd in June, bringing with him decades of experience in adventure sports, education and leadership.
His appointment comes at a pivotal time for the 3,500-acre estate as it strengthens its evolution into a year-round destination.
While snowsports will remain central in the winter months, there is growing focus on expanding the resort’s family-friendly outdoor activities and environmental learning all year round.
Originally from Aberdeen and educated at Keith Grammar School, Mr Gifford’s connection with the outdoors began early.
He honed his skills as an instructor in Glencoe before earning an honours degree in outdoor and leisure studies from Manchester Metropolitan University.
He went on to lead outdoor learning programmes for Aberdeen City Council, supporting young people with additional needs along the way.
His career has spanned firefighting with Grampian Fire and Rescue Service, running his own outdoor business, and most recently a leadership role at Huntly Development Trust.
At Sport Aberdeen, he managed Adventure Aberdeen for almost nine years, directing a wide range of outdoor experiences.
Now, he steps into the spotlight at Cairngorm, tasked with steering strategic growth while overseeing daily operations.
CMSL chair Peter Mearns said the appointment marks an exciting opportunity for the mountain resort.
He praised Mr Gifford’s leadership and financial skills, along with his deep passion for sport and the outdoors.
Cairngorm has been steadily improving its facilities in recent years with new attractions like mountain biking trails, a tubing slide, a children’s play area and beginner-friendly snow zones.
Upgrades to the Ptarmigan building, the car park and the viewing platform have also enhanced the visitor experience.
Mr Mearns said these developments show the resort’s commitment to quality and create a strong foundation for growth under new leadership.
He extended thanks to the resort’s loyal customers and encouraged continued support as Mr Gifford steps into his role.
Speaking ahead of his June start, Mr Gifford said he is excited to lead one of Scotland’s most iconic outdoor destinations.
He acknowledged the special place Cairngorm holds for the local community, visitors and adventure enthusiasts alike.
Calling it a “big responsibility,” he said he looks forward to working with the team to build on the mountain’s legacy.
Audrey MacIver of Highlands and Islands Enterprise, which owns the estate, welcomed the appointment as part of delivering the Cairngorm Masterplan.
She described the mountain as a key local employer and a vital driver for tourism and the wider economy.
With an ambitious 25-year vision in place, she said Cairngorm is poised to grow its role as a unique environmental and recreational asset for Scotland.
