Two new freight vessels will soon transform lifeline ferry services between Aberdeen, Kirkwall and Lerwick.

The Scottish Government has confirmed that procurement is now underway, with funding secured in the 2025 to 2026 budget.

The new ships will replace the current vessels, Helliar and Hildasay, which are operated by Serco NorthLink.

Designed as flexible freight vessels, they will bring greater freight capacity and higher speeds.

They will also offer space for up to 200 passengers during the busiest times of the year.

The contract is expected to be awarded in February 2026, with Caledonian Maritime Assets Limited (CMAL) managing the competitive tender process.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop confirmed the start of procurement during a response to a Parliamentary Question this week.

She said the Scottish Government remained fully committed to investing in the country’s lifeline ferry services.

“I am pleased to see this progress in procuring two new freight flex vessels for the Northern Isles,” she said.

“These vessels will bring improved freight capacity, higher operating speeds and more passenger space in peak season.”

“This will enhance the efficiency and reliability of ferry services to best meet the needs of businesses and communities in the Northern Isles for years to come.”

“The start of this procurement is an important milestone in our plans to improve ferry services.”

“I look forward to following the progress of this project in the months ahead.”

CMAL Chief Executive Kevin Hobbs said the tender marked an important step in strengthening the resilience of Northern Isles services.

“We look forward to receiving bids that demonstrate innovation, efficiency and the ability to deliver reliable vessels,” he said.

“These ships will support a more adaptable and robust service for years to come.”

Serco NorthLink Managing Director Stuart Garrett also welcomed the news.

“We are grateful for the efforts of everyone involved in reaching this first step in the competitive tender process,” he said.

“NorthLink Ferries welcomes the additional capacity these freight flex vessels will provide.”

“This will enable us to continue supporting the growth of the Northern Isles economies.”

The new vessels form a key part of modernising Scotland’s ferry network, offering more reliable services to the island communities that rely on them.
