NHS 24 Urges Holidaymakers not to Forget Essential Medicines

Holidaymakers across the Highlands are being urged to double check they have packed essential medicines before setting off on their summer travels.

NHS 24 says it regularly hears from people who arrive at their destination only to discover they have left behind important medication, turning what should be a relaxing break into an avoidable source of stress.

Commonly forgotten items include inhalers, insulin, blood pressure tablets and other prescription medicines needed to manage long term health conditions.

Dr John McAnaw, Associate Clinical Director at NHS 24, said the situation is more common than many people realise.

“It happens more frequently than you might think.

“People arrive at their destination ready to enjoy themselves, then suddenly realise their medicine is still at home.

“It can quickly turn a relaxing break into a stressful one.”

Missing medication, even for a short period, can have a significant impact on health, particularly for people living with ongoing conditions.

NHS 24 is encouraging people to take a few extra minutes before travelling to make sure they have enough medication for the entire trip.

The advice applies whether people are heading overseas for a fortnight in the sun or enjoying a few days away closer to home.

“It doesn’t matter if you are jetting off to Jamaica or camping in the Cairngorms.

“Remember to take your medicine with you as it might not be easy to replace when you get there, especially if you are in an unfamiliar or remote area,” Dr McAnaw said.

The reminder forms part of NHS 24’s summer campaign built around the message of Pack, Plan, Protect.

As well as taking essential medicines, people are being encouraged to think ahead by carrying remedies for bites, stings, hay fever and other minor ailments that can become a nuisance during holidays.

The campaign also highlights the importance of staying safe during periods of hot weather.

“Before you head off on your summer adventure, just take a moment to check you’ve packed what you need,” Dr McAnaw added.

“Make sure in advance that you’ve got enough medicine for your whole trip, keep it somewhere easy to reach such as your hand luggage, and check how it should be stored, especially in warm weather.

“These are really easy steps, but they can save you a lot of hassle at a time when you should be enjoying yourself on your well-earned break.”
