North Summer Fun With Gaelic Activities

A programme of Gaelic medium summer activities was offered to pupils in Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis and various schools in the Highland Council North area including Dingwall, Tain, Thurso and Ullapool during the school summer holidays.

The project was designed to offer children the opportunity to take part in Gaelic language activities throughout the holidays.

Councillor Calum Munro, Chair of Highland Council’s Gaelic Committee said:

“The Summer Gaelic Playscheme has created a huge opportunity for young people to be active and creative, have fun and enjoy themselves while using and learning Gaelic.”

Activities on offer included arts, crafts, football coaching skills, outdoor games and outdoor sports activities.

Drama sessions were included as part of the project and sessions were led by Fèis Rois Cultural Collective officer Artair Donald.

The football coaching skills session was ably led by Peigi Barker who plays football for Inverness Caledonian Thistle WFC.

Spòrs Gàidhlig (which is part of Comunn na Gàidhlig) were commissioned to deliver outdoor activities which included a diverse range of activities such as paddle boarding, gorge-walking, abseiling, coastal walks, forest skills and low – level hill walking.

All ages were catered for and pre-school children were invited with their families, to join in a trip to Abriachan Forest trails as well as a Gruffalo Walk in Culloden with the Highland Council Gaelic and Comunn na Gàidhlig officers.

Fèis air an Oir held their main Fèis during the summer holidays for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Fèis was supported by Highland Council’s Gaelic Team.

Gaelic conversation classes were offered to adults as part of the Fèis programme to raise awareness of the Gaelic language in the local area.

A Gaelic 0-3 group was run in conjunction with the Fèis main activities where parents were able to discuss Gaelic Medium education.

These activities were organised by the Highland Council’s Gaelic team with funding from Highland Council and Bòrd na Gàidhlig.
