Orkney Islands Council has secured £3 million in Scottish Government funding to replace its internal ferry fleet.

The funding will support the council’s plans to introduce two electric ferries as part of a pilot project.

It will also aid in developing a business case for the replacement of the full internal fleet.

The council is planning for eight new vessels to improve connectivity and boost tourism across the islands.

Three large ferries will serve Westray, Stronsay, Sanday, and Eday, while plans are in development for all of Orkney’s island communities.

This funding is in addition to £42 million allocated to local authority ferry services across Scotland in this year’s budget.

Finance Secretary Shona Robison, who leads the Orkney Internal Ferry Replacement Task Force, praised the council’s efforts in advancing their business case.

She highlighted the Scottish Government’s commitment to supporting island communities, noting £12 million has been distributed to support critical infrastructure projects since 2021.

Robison also emphasized ongoing collaboration with islanders and local authorities to shape the forthcoming National Islands Plan.

Orkney Islands Council Leader Heather Woodbridge welcomed the funding as a crucial step in replacing the ageing fleet.

She said discussions are ongoing to secure further funding and finalize a financial model to deliver the new fleet.

Woodbridge stressed the importance of providing modern ferries for Orkney’s island communities.
