Orkney Islands Council is supporting Foster Care Fortnight 2026 with a renewed appeal for more foster carers across Orkney.
The national awareness campaign runs from 11 to 24 May and is organised by The Fostering Network.
This year’s theme, This is Fostering, focuses on the real experiences of foster carers and the impact they have on the lives of children and young people.
The council said hundreds of foster carers across Scotland continue to provide safe and stable homes for vulnerable children but warned that foster carer numbers have been falling year after year including in Orkney.
The local authority said more carers are urgently needed to ensure children receive the support and stability they need within their own communities.
Diane Petrie said:
“Foster Care Fortnight is a moment for all of us to reflect on the incredible contribution our foster carers make every single day.
“In Orkney, we are a close knit community, and that spirit of looking out for one another is exactly what fostering embodies.
“We are grateful to every carer who opens their home and we are actively looking for more people people of all backgrounds and circumstances who might consider taking that step.”
The council said there is no single profile for becoming a foster carer and encouraged people from all backgrounds to make enquiries if they feel they could support a child during a difficult period in their life.
Throughout the fortnight, the council will share stories and information from foster carers and support staff across Orkney.
The fostering service also highlighted the support available to carers including dedicated social worker support, ongoing training and 24 hour advice.
The council stressed that making an enquiry carries no obligation and is simply an opportunity for people to ask questions and learn more about fostering.
