The Highland Times is saddened to report the death of Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State.

He passed away peacefully in the Vatican this morning, aged 88.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, made history in 2013 when he became the first pontiff from the Society of Jesus, the first from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere, and the first non-European pope in more than 1,200 years—since Syrian-born Pope Gregory III in the 8th century.

A spiritual leader renowned for his humility, compassion, and progressive views, Francis sought to bring the Church closer to the people, often eschewing grandeur in favour of simplicity.

He championed issues such as climate change, social justice, and the plight of the poor, while also calling for a more inclusive and understanding Church.

His papacy was marked by significant efforts to reform the Vatican, confront historic abuses, and open dialogue with other faiths and cultures.

Admired by many across the globe—both within and beyond the Catholic faith—Francis remained a steady moral voice during times of global uncertainty.

The world now mourns a remarkable man who carried the burdens of the papacy with grace, humanity, and unwavering commitment to peace and dignity for all.

A conclave of cardinals will soon be convened to elect his successor.

May he rest in peace.
