Plans to tackle landslip issues on the A83 Rest and Be Thankful have reached a major milestone with the publication of draft Orders by the Scottish Government.
The proposals outline both a long-term solution, featuring a 1.4-kilometre debris flow shelter, and medium-term improvements to the Old Military Road diversion route to boost its resilience.
A series of public exhibitions will take place from 15 January 2025, showcasing the plans and Environmental Impact Assessments.
An online virtual exhibition is also available at pinpointcloud.co.uk/A83restandbethankful.
Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding this critical route, which connects communities and businesses in Argyll & Bute.
She emphasised the urgency of ensuring reliable and safe access, describing the long-term solution as essential for future generations.
The proposed scheme includes not only the debris flow shelter but also upgrades to the Rest and Be Thankful car park and viewpoint, as well as a new active travel link from the car park to the B828.
Work on the temporary diversion route continues alongside these plans, with improvements to the Old Military Road already underway.
Initial upgrades completed earlier this year included realigning the southern section of the route, and further enhancements are scheduled for 2025, starting with debris flow fencing.
Future phases will widen sections of the single-track road, improve sharp bends, and construct a new two-way bridge over the Croe Water, alongside landslide mitigation measures.
These improvements aim to reduce the impact of landslides on the diversion route, providing a more dependable alternative during A83 closures caused by adverse weather.
Hyslop encouraged members of the public to engage with the upcoming exhibitions to learn more about the project and provide feedback.
The Scottish Government’s efforts highlight their commitment to working with local communities and stakeholders to maintain connectivity and support the economy of Argyll & Bute.
