The optimism was palpable in 2024 referendum campaign
Ten years after the Scottish independence referendum, award-winning Scottish Actor, Alan Cumming, has urged Scots to “believe in the power of yes.”
Cumming was one of many well known Scottish figures to support the Yes campaign in the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum.
In a video to mark the 10 year anniversary, Alan Cumming said:
“I have been looking back to 2014 and remembering the great feeling of positivity and optimism and hope that abounded.
“That feeling, that optimism was palpable everywhere.
“A feeling of hope.
“A feeling that we could really change things.
“A feeling that we could do better.
“I don’t think we have been better together.
“We can see from austerity and from Brexit that wealth has actually gone from Scotland and the Scottish Government has had its powers thwarted by Westminster.
“Let’s try and get back to a place where we believe in ourselves, we believe in the future, and we believe in the power of yes.”
Responding, Nicola Sturgeon said:
“The independence referendum was a time when Scotland was bursting with energy, imagination and ambition – wherever you went people were talking about the future with passion.
“Politicians obviously played the role we could but actors and artists like Alan Cumming joining the Yes campaign helped us take the case for Scottish independence speak to as many people as possible – and it was a joy to see an increasing number of famous Scots support a Yes vote.
“Alan’s message today is one that will resonate with independence supporters the length and breadth of Scotland, and I hope convince and persuade others of the case for Yes.”
