James “Jimmy” Calderwood, a distinguished figure in Scottish football, passed away on January 19, 2025, at the age of 69.

Born on February 28, 1955, in Glasgow, Scotland, Calderwood’s career spanned several decades, leaving an indelible mark both as a player and a manager.

Calderwood began his professional playing career with Birmingham City as a midfielder in 1972, making 159 appearances over eight years.

In 1980, he moved to the Netherlands, spending nearly 10 years there, where he played for clubs including Sparta Rotterdam, Willem II Tilburg, Roda JC, and Heracles Almelo, before retiring in 1989.

Transitioning into management, Calderwood took the helm at Dutch clubs Willem II Tilburg and NEC Nijmegen.

In 1999, he returned to Scotland to manage Dunfermline Athletic, leading them to a fourth-place finish in the Scottish Premier League and a Scottish Cup Final appearance in 2004.

He then managed Aberdeen from 2004 to 2009, guiding them to the last 32 of the 2007-08 UEFA Cup.

His managerial career also included stints at Kilmarnock and Go Ahead Eagles.

On February 16th 2011, he was tasked with keeping Ross County in the First Division, a job he successfully fulfilled, leaving the club at the end of that season.

His final managerial role before retirement was a very short stint in January 2014 for Dutch team, De Graafschap, where he resigned within a month, angry at the sale of 2 key players before the beginning of the season.

In 2017, Calderwood announced he had been diagnosed with early-onset dementia 2 years previously, a condition he bravely battled in his later years. He passed away due to complications of dementia.

The football community mourns his loss, remembering him for his contributions to the sport and his charismatic presence on and off the field.
