SNP MPs have called for “all the wealth GB energy produces from Scotland’s energy to be ring-fenced and returned for the benefit of the Scottish people.”
The call comes as the second reading of the Great British Energy Bill will be debated at Westminster today.
SNP MPs will seek to fundamentally change the bill with amendments as it passes through Westminster and have challenged Scottish Labour MPs to support changing the bill to insert the principle that “Scotland’s energy resources should, first and foremost, serve the needs of the people of Scotland.”
SNP Westminster Leader Stephen Flynn said:
“After much delay and confusion within the UK Labour government, it appears that we finally have confirmation that the headquarters of GB energy will be located in Aberdeen.
“However, real confusion around GB energy remains surrounding how this organisation will operate and who it will benefit.
“That’s why the SNP will seek to fundamentally change the GB energy legislation.
“SNP MPs will seek to bring amendments that will guarantee that all the wealth GB energy produces from Scotland’s energy will be ring-fenced and returned for the benefit of the Scottish people.
“Scotland is an energy rich nation, it is a scandal that Westminster energy policy means that far too many of our people are fuel poor.
“It is right and reasonable that Scotland’s energy resources should, first and foremost, serve the needs of the people of Scotland.
“That is the principle SNP MPs will uphold and we will be challenging Scottish Labour MPs to do the same.”
