More families across Scotland are rediscovering the simple pleasures of caravan holidays as growing numbers look to escape busy lives, put down their phones and spend more meaningful time together this summer.
New research from Parkdean Resorts suggests that while modern life has made it harder for families to properly connect, there is a growing appetite for holidays that focus less on screens and more on shared experiences.
The survey found that one in six Scots say they do not feel connected to their family, while 14 per cent admit they rarely enjoy uninterrupted quality time together.
Mobile phones appear to be one of the biggest obstacles, with 14 per cent saying they are always on their devices during family time.
Despite those challenges, almost three quarters of Scottish adults said they would consider taking a digital detox holiday, although many admitted they would need a little help to make it work.
Nearly a third said organised activities would encourage them to put their phones away, while one in three believed designated phone free periods would make switching off much easier.
For many, the biggest attraction is simply spending quality time together, with 41 per cent saying reconnecting with family and friends would be the highlight of an unplugged holiday, while almost a quarter pointed to the mental health benefits of stepping away from technology.
The research has prompted Parkdean Resorts to launch its new Unplugged campaign, encouraging families to embrace slower holidays, recreate happy childhood memories and enjoy time away from their digital devices.
The findings also revealed that caravan holidays remain Scotland’s strongest childhood holiday memory, underlining the lasting appeal of traditional seaside breaks that many families remember with affection.
Kate Smith, Regional Director for Scotland at Parkdean Resorts, believes the country’s natural beauty makes it an ideal destination for families looking to reconnect.
She said:
“In Scotland, we’re very lucky to have access to some of the most incredible coastlines and outstanding landscapes in the UK.
“Whether families want to spend time by the ocean, enjoy a walk or hike together, or visit one of Scotland’s stunning National Scenic Areas, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
“For families looking to disconnect from devices and spend quality time together, we believe Scotland is the perfect place to do it.
“With so much to see and do, it’s a destination where lasting memories are made.”
The research comes as uncertainty surrounding overseas travel continues to encourage more people to consider holidays closer to home, with staycations once again proving popular across Scotland.
For many families, the appeal is not simply about convenience or cost, but about rediscovering the slower pace and shared experiences that made childhood holidays so memorable in the first place.
Whether it is a walk along the beach, exploring the Highlands, enjoying an evening around a caravan table or simply leaving phones behind for a few hours, the message from the survey is clear that many Scots are ready to swap notifications for conversations and make family time the priority once again.
