Scottish Professional Football League attendances are set to break the four million mark for the first time as the William Hill Premiership title race heads towards a dramatic conclusion.
A total of 3,901,065 supporters have already attended Premiership matches this season ahead of another major round of fixtures tonight and across the final weekend.
Just 98,935 fans are now needed across the remaining matches to push total attendances beyond four million and surpass last season’s top flight record of 3,986,145.
League leaders Heart of Midlothian FC host Falkirk FC tonight at a sold out Tynecastle Park with Hearts currently sitting one point clear at the top of the table.
Second placed Celtic FC travel to Motherwell FC at Fir Park while Rangers FC host Hibernian FC at Ibrox in tonight’s remaining top six fixtures.
Fir Park welcomed one of its largest league crowds in recent years at the weekend when 12,306 supporters watched Motherwell face Hearts.
The season could conclude with a decisive final day title clash between Celtic and Hearts on Saturday 16 May.
Hearts are chasing what would be their first top flight league title since the 1959 to 1960 season under manager Derek McInnes.
Average attendance across each Premiership round currently stands at 107,521 supporters.
Neil Doncaster said:
“It’s been an incredible William Hill Premiership season so far, and it’s amazing to see that reflected in rising attendances across the country.
“This season’s top flight has truly captured the attention of fans in Scotland and beyond, and supporters play a vital role in making our game so compelling.
“We’d like to thank fans for their incredible loyalty as we look ahead to some huge matches tonight and this weekend in front of packed stadiums.”
The SPFL has already attracted more than 5.1 million supporters across league matches, cup competitions and play offs this season.
Scottish football also continues to lead Europe for top flight attendances per head of population according to UEFA figures published last year.
