Nearly half of parents in Scotland are struggling with the Tory crunch on bills.
On Random Act of Kindness Day, the SNP is urging Scottish Tory MPs who have been missing in action for months to ‘show some compassion and step up’ for Scottish families struggling with household bills, as the Tory cost of living crisis escalates.
As the Tory cost of living crisis escalates, SNP MSP Elena Whitham (pictured) has highlighted research from Ipsos Scotland released last week which showed that almost half of Scottish parents (46%) are finding it difficult to afford their household bills.
The research came on the same day Tesco supermarket’s chairman John Allan warned the “worst is yet to come” as food prices are set to soar by 5% by Spring.
Commenting SNP MSP Elena Whitham said:
“It is grim to see almost half of parents are struggling to afford their household bills.
“Having made it through the challenges the pandemic has placed on households, families are now facing a cost of living crisis that the Tory UK Government is failing to tackle.
“It is paramount that Westminster wake up to what families are facing right now instead of forcing more and more families into the shameful situation of having to choose between eating and heating.
“If the Scottish Tory MPs want to show they have one ounce of compassion for the people they claim to represent then they need to show some compassion and step up for Scottish families left struggling with household bills because of cruel Westminster policies.
“Almost half a million Scots are having to cut back on food to deal with bills right now because of the cumulative impact of energy bill rises, the Tory’s National Insurance tax hike, Westminster welfare cuts and the soaring cost of Brexit.
“For every step Scotland takes forward in tackling poverty with policies like the ‘game changing’ Scottish Child payment, we are being held back by Westminster.
“It is only with the full powers of independence that we can properly support families across Scotland and create a fairer society.”
