The Highlands will come alive once more this autumn as the iconic Baxters Loch Ness Marathon and Festival of Running returns.
Now in its 23rd year, the event takes place on Sunday 28 September 2025.
Entries are disappearing fast, so anyone dreaming of lacing up for this extraordinary race should act quickly.
Few events can match the magic of running along the legendary shores of Loch Ness.
This is a weekend that brings together runners, families and supporters from all corners of Scotland and far beyond.
The festival kicks off on Saturday 27 September with the much-loved Runners Café and Sports Expo.
Hosted by BBC’s Bryan Burnett, the Expo is open to all and is the perfect place to soak up the excitement before race day.
The marathon itself offers a breathtaking 26.2-mile route that begins near Fort Augustus.
Runners will wind through wild Highland landscapes along the southeastern shore of Loch Ness before finishing in the heart of Inverness.
Regularly voted among the most scenic marathons in the world, it is a feast for both body and soul.
If a marathon feels a step too far, there is plenty more on offer.
The Baxters River Ness 10K is a flat and fast course through Inverness and along the beautiful River Ness.
There is also a Corporate Challenge, perfect for teams of colleagues to share the experience.
For a gentler distance, the Baxters River Ness 5K welcomes runners of all ages and abilities.
And the youngest participants are not left out.
The adorable Wee Nessie fun run invites children aged five and under to join the fun in Bught Park.
For those who miss out on a general entry marathon place, charity spots are available with fantastic partner charities.
These include Macmillan Cancer Support, Alzheimer Scotland, Cancer Research UK, Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Highland Hospice, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation and Parkinson’s UK.
Running for a cause adds even more heart to this inspiring weekend.
Malcolm Sutherland, CEO of Caledonian Concepts, said:
“The demand this year has been incredible.
“The Loch Ness Marathon is such a special event.
“There is something magical about running in the Highlands.”
“Whether it is your first 5K or your tenth marathon, the energy, scenery and spirit are unforgettable.”
Last year, the event welcomed more than 10,000 runners from over 45 countries.
This year is set to be even bigger.
If running alongside the famous waters of Loch Ness is on your bucket list, do not delay.
