Thrilling Weekend of Shinty Action Across The Highlands and Beyond

It was another captivating weekend for shinty fans, with drama unfolding across all divisions and cups as the season heads into full swing.

Friday night’s Mowi North Division 2 clash saw Lovat edge Lochaber by a single goal, with Iain Nicolson finding the net in the 74th minute to secure the win.

Saturday brought the excitement of the Ferguson Transport and Shipping Balliemore Cup second round.

Inveraray impressed with a 4-0 victory, Fraser Watt opening the scoring before a superb hat-trick from Lewis Montgomery sealed the tie.

Lochaber overcame Glasgow Mid Argyll with late goals from Shaun Nicolson, while Col Glen and Oban Celtic shared six goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw.

Strathglass battled hard but Inverness came out on top, winning 4-2 thanks to braces from Mikey Bell and Skye MacIntosh.

In the Strathdearn Cup, Skye edged a classic against Kingussie, triumphing 6-5 after extra time with Iain MacLellan completing his hat-trick in dramatic fashion.

Newtonmore were in fine form in the Mowi Premiership, easing past Kyles Athletic 4-0, while Skye put five past Lovat in an entertaining 5-2 win.

Elsewhere, Glenurquhart impressed in Mowi North Division 1 with a 5-1 win over Kingussie, as Michael Fraser helped himself to a hat-trick.

In the south, Fort William stormed to an 8-0 triumph against Glengarry, Graham Campbell netting four.

Glasgow Mid Argyll also recorded a commanding win, defeating Lochside Rovers 5-1.

Caberfeidh edged Inverness 2-1 in Mowi North Division 2, and Lewis were comfortable 4-0 winners in their tie.

Ardnamurchan narrowly beat Kilmory 4-3 in Mowi South Division 2, while Stirling fell 6-1 to Uddingston.

Bute claimed a 2-1 win over Tayforth in a tightly contested affair.

The youth fixtures delivered their own share of excitement.

Newtonmore’s Under 17 side booked their place in the Mactavish Trophy final with a 7-1 win over Beauly.

In the South of Scotland, Oban Camanachd put six past Glasgow Mid Argyll, while Kyles Athletic progressed after a 1-0 victory against Bute.

The National Under 14 MacMaster Cup brought more goals.

Lovat edged out Glasgow Mid Argyll 4-3, and Newtonmore overcame Inveraray 2-0.

Glengarry were in sensational form in the Under 17 Development League, putting 12 past Strathspey.

Women’s fixtures also provided fine entertainment.

Glenurquhart and Kinlochshiel played out a goalless draw in the Mowi Premier League, while Badenoch ran out 6-1 winners over GMA.

In the Mowi National League, Strathglass and Dunadd both secured strong wins, while Aberdour impressed with an 8-3 victory.

Finally, Uddingston continued their good form in the Mowi South League with a 5-0 triumph over Tayforth.

It was a weekend packed with passion, skill and sporting spirit, and with summer just beginning, the shinty season promises plenty more to come.
