Furlough scheme must be extended, not scaled back.
The SNP has said the Tory government must not cut financial support for millions of workers – after reports the Chancellor is planning to cut furlough scheme payments to sixty per cent.
SNP Shadow Chancellor Alison Thewliss MP (pictured) said the Job Retention Scheme should be extended not scaled back – warning reducing the UK government contribution would push people into hardship.
Commenting, SNP Shadow Chancellor Alison Thewliss MP said:
“Reports that the Tory government is planning to cut back financial support for millions of workers are deeply concerning.
“Cutting financial support in the middle of a public health emergency would push people further into hardship and increase unemployment.
“Instead of reducing furlough scheme payments the Chancellor should extend the scheme, fix the serious gaps and ensure people get the support they need.
“I have businesses in my own constituency who haven’t yet received their payments, so talk of winding the scheme down is causing significant anxiety for businesses and employees alike.
“The SNP will continue to press the UK government to look again at introducing a comprehensive financial package, including a guaranteed minimum income and strengthened welfare protections – to ensure no one is left behind.”
