Javier Munoz Moreno, a dedicated learner and volunteer from Spain, has been named the Overall Student of the Year 2024 at UHI Inverness.

Javier, who started at UHI without speaking English, has been recognised for his significant contributions to campus life, helping both fellow students and the university.

Javier (36) progressed from his English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) studies to a full-time Computing with Esports course.

He serves as a Student Engagement Representative, volunteers at the student food bank, The Larder, and assists with the ICT Helpdesk.

His involvement extends beyond campus, where he teaches Spanish and supports various digital skills initiatives.

Lynsey Mason, Kelly Mackenzie and Emma Baillie nominated Javier

Upon receiving the award, Javier said:

“This award is not only an acknowledgment for how I am and what I have done, but for what I have overcome.”

Staff members nominated Javier for his tireless dedication to helping others, highlighting his role in fostering a supportive campus environment.

“Javier is always reliable, focused, and looking for opportunities to help others, especially those who are disadvantaged,” said his nominators, Emma Baillie, Kelly Mackenzie, and Lynsey Mason.

Personal Development Advisor Leigh Payne added:

“He gives as much as he receives, always volunteering with a smile.”

Alongside Javier, two other students were honored:

Rachel Fraser won the Overcoming Adversity Award

Overcoming Adversity Award – Rachel Fraser, BA (Hons) Events Management

Rachel Fraser, a graduate of the Events Management program, was recognised for her determination to succeed despite ongoing health challenges caused by a fall injury.

Her lecturer, Sinead Brydon, praised her perseverance and academic achievements.

Rachel’s efforts also extended beyond her studies, organising a charity event, Musically Glitzy, which raised £600 for causes that supported her health journey.

“I was shocked to receive this award,” Rachel said. “This year has been so hard, battling health conditions that made it difficult to get out of bed.”

Most Improved Award – Jordan Fenly, Skillsbuilder 3, Supported Education

Jordan Fenly, who started with UHI Inverness in 2021, was recognized for his remarkable personal growth and progress.

His Personal Development Advisor, Ralph Gunn, praised Jordan’s efforts to improve his communication skills and help others in his class.

“I was really happy and surprised when I found out I had won an award,” Jordan said. “My reading and spelling have improved, and I’ve built better friendships.”

Jordan’s progress has been so notable that he was selected to participate in a student focus group for UHI’s annual review by Education Scotland.

His achievements reflect the support and commitment he received from his teachers.

All three winners were nominated by staff members and will receive their awards at UHI Inverness’s Graduation and Celebration of Success and Achievement on October 4th.

In addition to the main winners, five other students received highly commended prizes for their academic and personal achievements.

Professor Chris O’Neil, UHI Inverness Principal, praised the winners for their dedication and resilience, calling them “true role models” who embraced the learning process despite challenges.

“I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each of them,” he said.
