The SNP has renewed calls for the UK government to speed up and expand financial support for people and businesses – after the Bank of England Governor warned the UK economy could be heading for the worst quarter since records began.

With Andrew Bailey warning a 35% plunge in GDP was “not implausible”, Alison Thewliss MP (pictured) said it was crucial the UK government fixed the serious gaps in the financial support available to ensure no one is left behind.

The SNP Shadow Chancellor urged Rishi Sunak to speed up the delivery of cash to businesses and expand support for people – with a guaranteed minimum income, strengthened welfare protections, and improvements to the Job Retention Scheme and Self-Employment Income Support Scheme.

Commenting, Alison Thewliss MP said:

“These stark warnings underline the serious threat to our economy – and the urgent need for the UK government to speed up and expand financial support to people and businesses, so no one is left behind.

“After weeks of waiting, millions of people and businesses are still not getting the help they need.

“It is vital that the Chancellor speeds up the delivery of cash to small and medium businesses to help them stay afloat and prevent even more job losses.

“The UK government must also fix the serious gaps in financial support for people by introducing a guaranteed minimum income, strengthening welfare protections, and extending eligibility for the emergency schemes to help people get through this crisis.

“It is crucial that the right action is taken now to stop people falling through the gaps, and to ensure strong economic recovery.

“The SNP will continue to press the UK government to ensure all our people, public services and businesses get the support they need.”
