A decade of community investment in the North of Lewis has seen local organisations benefit from over half a million pounds, thanks to Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn (Galson Estate Trust).

The community-owned estate, which manages 56,000 acres on behalf of the residents, launched its Community Investment Fund (CIF) in October 2014, using income from the Ballantrushal wind turbines to support local initiatives.

Since its inception, the CIF has awarded nearly £600,000 to 150 diverse projects, ranging from environmental conservation and skills development to cultural heritage and health improvement.

The Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn has backed local organisations such as Comunn Eachdraidh Nis, Lewis & Harris Youth Pipe Band, Hebrides Mountain Rescue, and Taigh Dhonnchaidh, providing vital support to initiatives that benefit the community.

The very first grant, awarded in 2014 to the Ness Cemetery Association, has now come full circle, with the organisation receiving further support in 2024.

Iain G. Macdonald from the Ness Cemetery Association shared how the funding has helped make access to the historic Teampall Pheadair safer, ensuring visitors can pay their respects to the ‘forefathers of the hamlet’ in this ancient burial site.

Marie Gillies, Community Investment Officer, reflected on the fund’s impact over the past decade, highlighting its focus on projects that improve wellbeing, land use, tourism, and local heritage.

She noted how the fund has enhanced community facilities, supported local events, helped organisations purchase much-needed equipment, and contributed to preserving Galson Estate’s cultural legacy.

Gillies also encouraged local groups to reach out for potential support, especially those aiming to improve health, care, tourism, or cultural access in North Lewis.

The success of the CIF is evident in the range of projects it has supported, with beneficiaries like Taigh Dhonnchaidh expressing their gratitude for the continued financial help.

In addition to the CIF, Urras Oighreachd Ghabhsainn offers a wide range of social projects and programmes across the estate, further cementing its role as a key driver of community wellbeing and development in the Outer Hebrides.

As the Galson Estate Trust looks ahead, the focus remains on fostering a thriving local community through continued support for initiatives that make a real difference to the lives of its residents.
