The much-loved Wee Ferintosh Bus is set to continue serving the Black Isle, thanks to a fresh collaboration between Communities in Motion CT (CiMCT) and The Highland Council (THC), ensuring the service runs seven days a week from December.

Kicking off on 2nd December 2024, this new agreement guarantees long-term support for the bus, with a mix of paid staff and volunteers at the helm, bringing reliability and sustainability to the vital community transport service.

The announcement fittingly coincides with Community Transport Week, which celebrates the crucial role non-profit transport services play in helping communities across the UK.

Running from 14 to 18 October 2024, the week showcases the inspiring work of community transport initiatives in connecting people to essential services, employment, and social opportunities, while fostering independence.

Angus Watson, Chair of CiMCT, expressed his excitement about the new partnership, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of volunteers and supporters who have made the service possible.

He praised the unwavering backing of The Highland Council’s Community Transport team, whose guidance and support have been instrumental in making the vision of community transport a reality for Ferintosh and beyond.

Looking to the future, Watson believes the Wee Ferintosh Bus will continue to thrive under the new arrangement, benefiting from the combined efforts of local volunteers and soon-to-be-appointed staff.

He emphasised that the service, which has already become a vital lifeline for many, will now be better positioned to address wider community transport needs across the region.

Councillor Ken Gowans, Chair of the Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, applauded the collaboration that brought the project to fruition, calling it a great achievement in providing accessible and sustainable transport for Black Isle residents.

He highlighted the community-led nature of the project, reflecting a strong local drive to enhance transport services in the area.

The announcement, made at the start of Community Transport Week, couldn’t be more timely, as this year’s theme is “Celebrating Community Solutions.”

Gowans noted that the Wee Ferintosh Bus embodies this spirit, offering a flexible and affordable service that strengthens local connections.

Becky Richmond, Chair of Ferintosh Community Council, shared her appreciation for the work of local volunteers, crediting them with securing the future of the Wee Bus.

She added that the newly established CiMCT not only guarantees continued service but also opens up opportunities to explore broader transport ambitions outlined in the Black Isle Local Place Plan.

With this new partnership, the Wee Ferintosh Bus is poised to become an even more vital part of the Black Isle’s transport network, ensuring residents remain connected and supported well into the future.
