West Highland Chamber of Commerce (WHCC) has announced new support for tourism and hospitality businesses on Skye, following the formal closure of ‘SkyeConnect’ at an Extraordinary General Meeting on 7 May 2025.
Originally established as a Destination Management Organisation (DMO), SkyeConnect represented businesses and individuals across the island’s tourism industry.
It played a key role in promoting Skye and supporting the local economy.
However, changing public sector policy and a lack of sustainable funding have made its continuation unviable.
Frazer Coupland, CEO of the West Highland Chamber of Commerce, which now includes Skye within its expanded remit, struck a positive tone:
“While it’s disappointing that public finance for DMOs has reduced, we’re ready to step in and help.
“West Highland Chamber already supports many businesses in the area, and we look forward to helping even more.
“Tourism is vital to Skye and the West Highlands, and we’re committed to making sure local businesses continue to thrive.”
Existing SkyeConnect members are being invited to transfer their membership to WHCC, gaining access to enhanced business support through the wider Scottish Chambers of Commerce network.
As part of the new approach, a dedicated tourism leadership group will be created on Skye to focus on the unique challenges and opportunities facing the sector.
Matthew Jackson, of the Sonas Hotel Group and a former voluntary director of SkyeConnect, welcomed the transition:
“This is a new chapter for Skye’s tourism industry.
“I would like to thank our interim chair and fellow directors for their support in securing SkyeConnect’s evolving future.
“We’re confident that the support of West Highland Chamber will help protect and grow Skye’s global reputation for world-class hospitality and unforgettable visitor experiences.”
