Westminster Cost of Living Crisis Sends Costs of Christmas Dinner Soaring

The SNP has warned that Christmas dinners won’t be safe from Westminster’s cost-of-living crisis as food prices continue to spiral thanks to Brexit.

It comes after the cost of key Christmas Dinner staples have soared over the last year.

A free-range turkey is up 5%, while a frozen one is up 8.5%. Carrots are up by 21.5%, tatties 26%, while parsnips are up almost 15%.

Brexit, the war in Ukraine and other supply chain factors have caused inflation to soar with the figure up 2.3% in October under the Labour government’s watch.

With 900,000 Scottish pensioners having been robbed of their Winter Fuel Payment this Christmas and heating bills up 10%, the SNP is demanding the Labour government act to support families this festive period.

Commenting, the SNP’s Kirsty Blackman MP said:

“Sir Keir Starmer’s cost-of-living crisis has sent food costs through the roof and energy bills rocketing – it’s no wonder the public are furious and demanding a General Election in their millions.

“Turkeys are up 8.5% at the till, tatties have ticked up 26% and even the carrots have cranked up 21.5% – plating up a Christmas dinner will be no mean feat for Scots this year yet the Labour Government continue to pour fuel on the cost of living crisis fire.

“The Labour Party promised “change” at the General Election, but instead they’ve robbed pensioners of their Winter Fuel Payment leaving the SNP Scottish Government to clear up the mess and introduce a new, unique Scottish payment – while the Labour Government fails Scotland, the SNP Scottish Government will continue to deliver for Scots.”
