Shetland MSP and Scottish Liberal Democrat Beatrice Wishart hosted delegates representing the emerging space sector from African nations, in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday 7th December.
The event culminated in discussions with the Cabinet Secretary for Constitution, External Affairs and Culture, Angus Robertson MSP, about possible cross continent collaboration in the space sector.
Delegates are taking part in a UK Space tour and Ms Wishart was initially approached by fellow Shetlander and Craft Prospect Board Chair Yvette Hopkins to host the delegation.
This follows the development of the SaxaVord Spacecentre in Unst, the importance of which Wishart has previously raised in the Parliament.
After the meeting Ms Wishart said:
“Space is bringing together a global community to expand knowledge and develop technologies beneficial to all.
“Scotland and Shetland are poised to take advantage of emerging technology and the benefits from low earth orbit vertical launches.
“Thank you to Yvette Hopkins in bringing delegates to the Parliament and to the Cabinet Secretary, and highlighting the role the Scottish Government will play in this exciting new sector.
“It was great to have leaders and experts of the global space economy in the Scottish Parliament.
“Where we can build connections and develop technology to benefit all, we must grasp those opportunities.”
