Alarm Bells Are Ringing Following Massive BP Job Cuts Move

Must read

The SNP has called on the UK government to urgently set out a package of targeted measures for the struggling oil and gas industry in the UK, after BP confirmed plans to cut 10,000 jobs in their worldwide operations.

Richard Thomson MP, warned that the mass redundancies – likely to include jobs in Scotland – would deliver yet another hammer blow to the workforce and the industry as a whole.

The SNP has repeatedly pressed the Treasury to bring forward targeted support for the sector, including assistance for energy transition to a net zero economy – with the Scottish Government earlier this year also confirming plans to convene regular meetings of the Strategic Leadership Group and Oil and Gas and Energy Transition to focus on gaps in support and to help it navigate through this challenging period.

Richard Thomson MP, said:

“The scale of redundancies set out by BP today will come as a real shock to workers, their families, the wider community and the industry.

“The oil and gas sector in Scotland’s North East and the rest of the UK is vital to our economy and holds a central role in the transition to a net zero economy.

“The SNP has repeatedly called on the UK government to bring forward a targeted support package for the oil and gas sector to prevent further job losses and ensure it plays its part in the energy transition – that has so far fallen on deaf ears.

“The oil and gas industry faces ongoing challenges as it navigates through the coronavirus pandemic coupled with the global crash in oil and gas prices – with industry organisations warning that the developments could deliver a ‘body blow’ to the sector.

“It is now vital that the UK government listens to business concerns, identifies gaps in support, and takes the necessary steps to invest in the sector and put energy transition at the heart of the industry – otherwise it risks losing the industry in the North East of Scotland and elsewhere in the UK for good.

“After providing almost £350bn to the Treasury coffers over the years, it is high time the UK government supported the oil and gas sector in its time of need.”
