The SNP has said Boris Johnson must agree to a two-year extension to the Brexit transition period – urging the Prime Minister to put the economy ahead of the demands of Tory hardliners.

In a letter today, Ian Blackford said Boris Johnson must show leadership – and warned failing to agree an extension would cause unforgivable damage to jobs, businesses, living standards and the economy.

The SNP Westminster Leader also called for a meeting in the coming days to discuss the UK government’s wider response to the coronavirus crisis.

Commenting, Ian Blackford MP said:

“Boris Johnson must put his responsibilities to the UK economy ahead of the demands of Tory hardliners – and urgently agree a two-year extension to the Brexit transition period.

“Ploughing ahead with a hard Brexit deadline – and threatening the disaster of No-deal – in the middle of a global pandemic and economic crisis would cause unforgivable damage to jobs, businesses, living standards and the economy.

“The clock is ticking – the Tory leader must show leadership.

“Many businesses would struggle to survive another crisis piled onto the one we already face.

“The SNP will continue to press the UK government to deliver increased financial support for people and businesses – and for a Brexit extension to avoid further damage we simply cannot afford.”
