Cyclists Set to Conquer Loch Ness as Etape Returns With Record Turnout

Over 6,000 cyclists will roll into Inverness this weekend for one of the UK’s most breathtaking sporting spectacles.

The Etape Loch Ness returns this Sunday with a sold-out field of riders ready to tackle the 66-mile closed-road circuit around the iconic waters of Loch Ness.

Now in its 11th year, the event has become a fixture on the UK cycling calendar, drawing amateur and experienced riders alike from across the globe.

Participants will enjoy a rare opportunity to ride traffic-free through the stunning Highland landscape, weaving along lochside roads, climbing into the hills, and descending past mountain views few get to experience from the saddle.

With 900 metres of total ascent, the challenge includes the fearsome King of the Mountain stage, a gruelling 4.8-mile climb out of Fort Augustus, peaking at a punishing 12% gradient.

But this event is not just about personal bests and physical feats.

Over 600 riders will be taking on the route for Macmillan Cancer Support, aiming to raise £255,000 this year alone.

Their efforts will add to the £2.18 million already raised since Macmillan became the event’s official charity partner in 2014.

Malcolm Sutherland of organisers Caledonian Concepts said the event has always been about more than just the numbers.

He praised the Macmillan cyclists and the thousands more who ride not only for the experience, but to make a difference.

The event continues to grow in international stature, with riders from 20 countries and five continents expected to take part.

From New Zealand to Germany, the Etape Loch Ness has become a bucket-list ride for those seeking both adventure and inspiration.

This year, with RideLondon 100 not taking place, the Etape will act as a qualifying event for the prestigious London Classics medal.

To claim that honour, riders must also complete the London Marathon and Swim Serpentine’s two-mile open water swim.

Though non-competitive, the sportive offers a unique sense of community and achievement, welcoming both newcomers and seasoned cyclists to share the challenge.

Its spirit lies in camaraderie, scenic glory, and the unwavering will to keep pedalling, whatever the incline.

Temporary traffic restrictions will be in place from Saturday 26th to Sunday 27th April to support the event’s smooth and safe running.

Spectators and locals can find full details on the official website.

Whether you’re riding, cheering, or just passing by, this weekend promises a spectacle of strength, scenery, and solidarity on the banks of Loch Ness.
