The Shetland Car Club is shifting up a gear as it expands its fleet, sharpens its branding and powers ahead with a greener future.
Two brand new six-seater electric vans have been added, bringing the total number of vehicles to ten.
The club, open to all islanders for both personal and business use, is part of a wider push to offer affordable, flexible transport without the long-term costs of owning a car.
Vehicles are available right across Mainland Shetland, with bookings possible for as little as half an hour.
The initiative, launched in April last year, is a joint effort from Shetland Islands Council and Enterprise Car Club.
Its goal is simple — cut carbon emissions and make transport easier and more efficient for everyone.
It’s designed to support both the Council’s staff and the wider community, offering convenience with a conscience.
From popping to the recycling centre to shifting gear for a local football match, the fleet is ready to help.
The new electric combi vans are based in Lerwick and will soon have permanent charging homes at Islesburgh Community Centre and Brae’s Rural Energy Hub.
Funding for the electric additions has come from Innovate UK, the UK Government’s innovation agency.
With environmental impact firmly on the radar, electric vehicles are becoming a core part of the club’s future.
Members can access the fleet 24/7 using the Enterprise Car Club app, with vehicles reserved on a first come, first served basis.
New users and existing members are also being offered driving credit to encourage more people to give the club a go.
Councillor Moraig Lyall, chair of the Council’s Environment and Transport Committee, says the benefits go beyond savings.
She believes it could help households rethink the need for a second vehicle.
The flexibility on offer means more people might feel confident ditching an extra car and relying on the club instead.
She said uptake within the Council has already been strong and more community involvement would be a welcome boost.
The Council hopes to grow the number of electric vehicles as demand rises and infrastructure improves.
This expansion marks another key step in building a cleaner, smarter transport system for Shetland’s future.
