A £4 million project to install a new energy-efficient Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) system at Inverness Airport is now complete.

The upgrade is part of the Highland and Islands Airports Limited’s wider programme to modernise infrastructure and reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

The advanced AGL system provides essential visual guidance to pilots during landing, taxiing, and take off in low-visibility conditions.

The new system meets Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requirements while delivering significant environmental benefits, including a reduction in energy consumption of up to 80%.

The project was completed with minimal disruption to airport operations or passenger services.

Graeme Bell, Inverness Airport General Manager, said:

“We are proud to have completed this important project, which will enhance the safety and sustainability of Inverness Airport.

“The new LED AGL system not only ensures continued compliance with regulatory standards but also represents a significant step forward in reducing our energy use and operational costs.

“This investment underscores our commitment to creating a more sustainable future while maintaining the reliability and efficiency of our airport services.”

The project reflects HIAL’s wider strategic goals to invest in sustainable technologies that secure the long-term safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility of its airport network.
