Fort George is set to host a fascinating new exhibition that offers a bird’s-eye view of Scotland’s history and landscapes, opening Friday 17 January.

The exhibition, titled Celebrating Scotland’s Landscapes, showcases stunning aerial photographs from the National Collection of Aerial Photography (NCAP), providing fresh perspectives on Scotland’s natural beauty and revealing stories etched into the land over millions of years.

Visitors can expect to delve into themes such as ancient settlements, forgotten ruins, and the profound ways humans have shaped and interacted with the environment.

Through these remarkable images, the exhibition uncovers the marks of our ancestors and explores how Scotland’s landscape tells tales of a shared heritage spanning centuries.

Claire Whitbread, Exhibitions Manager at Historic Environment Scotland, expressed excitement about bringing this unique display to Fort George, one of Scotland’s most iconic historic sites.

Ms Whitbread described the exhibition as a chance to see heritage from a fresh perspective, with aerial photography helping to inspire a deeper understanding of Scotland’s rich and varied history.

The National Collection of Aerial Photography is among the largest globally, housing over 30 million images that chronicle landscapes across time.

For those eager to learn more, the collection can be explored online via platforms such as Canmore.org.uk and AirPhotoFinder.ncap.org.

The exhibition will run daily until Sunday 27 April 2025, with entry included in the ticket price for Fort George.
