The long-awaited upgrade of the Corran Ferry has taken a major step forward with confirmation of up to £28 million in funding from the Scottish Government, allowing Highland Council to proceed with plans for a new electric ferry.

This funding, part of the Inverness and Highland City Region Deal, comes alongside existing commitments of £20 million from the UK Government and £10 million from Highland Council for shoreside infrastructure improvements, ensuring the future of this lifeline service.

The Corran Ferry, the busiest single-vessel route in Scotland, carries over 270,000 vehicles annually and provides a critical connection for communities across Ardgour, Sunart, Ardnamurchan, Morvern, and beyond.

Operating nearly year-round, this vital service links the peninsulas south of Fort William with the wider Highland region.

Finance Secretary Shona Robison highlighted the importance of the new ferry, stating:

“This funding will provide businesses and communities in Lochaber and Ardnamurchan with a reliable ferry service to enable them to thrive into the future.

“The new service will support the area’s vibrant visitor economy while also reducing carbon emissions with an electric vessel.”

Highland Council leader Cllr Raymond Bremner praised the announcement, calling it a “crucial lifeline” for the region’s economy and stability.

He noted:

“This funding will allow us to secure a much-needed replacement ferry and implement vital supporting infrastructure.

“The new ferry will address the challenges posed by our ageing fleet and provide a sustainable, reliable service for the communities, businesses, and visitors it serves.”

The electric ferry is also a step towards modernising Scotland’s transport networks, contributing to the goal of reducing carbon emissions.

Convener of the Council, Cllr Bill Lobban, added:

“This investment ensures a sustainable service for the years ahead, replacing outdated diesel vessels and meeting the community’s rightful demands for improvement.”

Stakeholders and community representatives have played a significant role in advancing this project, working closely with the council and government officials to bring about a solution.

With funding now secured, the focus turns to swift implementation, with Highland Council aiming to deliver both the new vessel and upgraded infrastructure as quickly as possible.

This upgrade promises not only to secure the future of the Corran Ferry but also to enhance the lives of those who depend on it, reinforcing its role as a cornerstone of connectivity in the Highlands.
