Helping Moray Speyside Businesses Cut Energy Costs and Boost Growth

Tourism and hospitality businesses across Moray Speyside are discovering new ways to save money, thanks to Visit Moray Speyside (VMS).

Gemma Cruickshank, CEO of VMS, has spent over two years focusing on initiatives that support more than 400 member firms.

With energy costs soaring and businesses facing rising National Insurance contributions this April, the need for cost-saving measures has never been greater.

British businesses are paying the highest energy prices among developed countries, adding pressure after the impacts of Covid and Brexit.

VMS partnered with Glasgow-based Eyebright Utilities, an energy broker that helps businesses secure better energy deals.

Eyebright reviews past energy bills and compares providers to find cost-effective options.

One success story is the WDC Scottish Dolphin Centre, which saved £5,000 annually on energy bills.

The Grampian Hotel in Keith cut its yearly gas bill by a third, saving over £2,500.

A self-catering property reduced its energy costs by £2,000, while other small businesses saved between £800 and £3,000.

Collectively, VMS members have saved around £20,000, with more businesses encouraged to take advantage of the scheme.

Savings can be reinvested into hiring staff, improving services, or maintaining operations, benefiting both local communities and the wider Scottish economy.

One business even funded new, energy-efficient windows using their savings, further reducing future energy costs.

This initiative is especially vital during harsh winters, where energy demands are higher.

Tourism in Moray Speyside is thriving, with a 25% increase in visitors in 2022/23, reaching over 877,000.

Visitor spending also rose significantly, contributing £187 million to the economy, up from £146 million.

These figures highlight the region’s growth potential and the importance of tourism to Scotland’s economy.

VMS continues to explore new ways to enhance business efficiency, ensuring sustained growth and resilience.

Visit Moray Speyside remains dedicated to supporting tourism, leisure, and hospitality businesses, strengthening the region’s economic landscape.
