Highlanders Hit by Rising Energy Bills Under Labour Government

Maree Todd MSP has urged the UK Labour Government to take immediate action to tackle the sharp rise in energy bills and fulfil its election promises, ahead of a Scottish Government debate on the cost-of-living this afternoon.

The Caithness, Sutherland & Ross MSP said:

“Highlanders, already burdened with higher energy bills than the rest of the country, are now experiencing even higher costs under a UK Labour Government.

“Labour promised during the election to cut energy bills by £300. Instead, bills have increased three times and are now nearly £300 higher.

“In the Highlands, where the cost of living is higher and fuel poverty affects more people than in other areas, this increase will be unaffordable for many of my constituents.

“Scotland is an energy-rich nation, yet under Labour, families in the Highlands are being forced to pay some of the highest electricity prices in Europe.

“This is the cost of Westminster’s control over our energy.”

Maree Todd MSP adds:

“Despite the challenges posed by UK austerity, Brexit, and the cost-of-living crisis, the SNP Government is delivering over £3 billion in 2025-26 to directly support vulnerable and low-income households with the cost of living.

“In contrast, the UK Labour Government has cut the Winter Fuel Payment for pensioners, upheld harmful Tory welfare cuts such as the two-child limit, continued with cruel Tory welfare reforms that target disabled and long-term ill people, and blocked compensation for WASPI women.”
