Hope Givers Wanted Across The Highlands to Help Feed the Future

Mary’s Meals is calling on people across the Highlands and Islands to become Hope Givers this Volunteers’ Week and help feed hungry children around the world.

What began in a tin shed in Dalmally has become a global mission, providing more than 2.6 million children with a daily school meal across 16 countries.

The charity’s work started in 2002 after founder Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow met Edward, a 14-year-old boy in Malawi whose mother was dying of AIDS.

When asked what he hoped for, Edward replied simply:

“I would like to have enough food to eat and to be able to go to school one day.”

That quiet plea became the heart of Mary’s Meals.

Today, the promise of a meal draws children into the classroom, giving them the chance to learn, grow and imagine a better future.

It costs just £19.15 to feed one child every school day for a year.

That impact is only possible thanks to the dedication of thousands of volunteers who give their time, skills and kindness.

Whether it’s cooking in a community kitchen overseas or organising a coffee morning here at home, every gesture of help builds something bigger.

As Volunteers’ Week runs from Monday 2 June to Sunday 8 June, Mary’s Meals is celebrating its volunteer family and inviting others to join.

Among those making a difference is Tricia from the Midlands, inspired after hearing a talk from long-time supporter Roger Neuberg.

Her grandson William, just eight years old at the time, was given a Mary’s Meals collection box and watched the charity’s powerful film Child 31.

Learning that £19.15 could feed a child for a whole year, he said:

“I already have £20 from my birthday, I want to save a child’s life.”

Soon after, William stood up at his school assembly to tell 400 classmates about Mary’s Meals.

His courage and compassion moved his gran to become a volunteer herself.

Together, they have raised over £2,600 through talks and events, inspiring audiences with their story.

“If any talks fall during the holidays, William comes with me,” says Tricia.

“His story lights up the room.”

William adds:

“If we each filled a box, we are all helping to save a child’s life.”

Mary’s Meals is encouraging more people to follow their example and join its growing movement.

Volunteers are needed to speak in local communities, organise fundraising, or offer practical support behind the scenes.

Jane Wright, Supporter Engagement Officer, says:

“Even one hour of your time, when it suits you, can help us reach more hungry children.”

“To those who already give so much, we are endlessly grateful.”

Become a Hope Giver today and help feed the future, one meal at a time.
