Increasingly Desperate Sarwar Facing Mounting Pressure

Labour’s leader in Scotland Anas Sarwar is “looking increasingly desperate” an SNP MSP has said – as his broken promises and complete lack of vision for Scotland come back to haunt him.

Anas Sarwar has claimed his support for a range of successful SNP policies including free tuition and the Scottish Child Payment which he previously attacked as “handouts” – only days after suggested he would take Nigel Farage’s support in order to become first minister, as Labour’s support continues to plummet.

In the last few weeks alone, Mr Sarwar has:

  • Had his broken promises on Grangemouth exposed – having claimed before the election that Labour would save the workforce.
  • Claimed his support for key SNP policies like free tuition, only weeks after attacking them as “handouts”
  • Failed to stand up to Keir Starmer on Labour’s broken promises to WASPI women – refusing to sign a cross-party letter to the Prime Minister
  • Refused to support the SNP’s Budget which would bring back universal winter heating support for pensioners and invest in scrapping the two-child cap.
  • Faced criticism for suggesting he would accept Nigel Farage’s support to become First Minister – opening the door to Farage’s toxic right-wing politics
  • Oversaw an astonishing decline in Labour’s support in opinion polls, with the most recent poll showing Labour within touching distance of finishing in fifth place

SNP MSP Collette Stevenson said:

“Last week Anas Sarwar was trying to be Nigel Farage, this week he’s trying to be the SNP – but it is clear that the one thing he doesn’t want to be is Labour, as the party’s disastrous list of broken promises grows even longer and support plummets.

“Whether on Winter Fuel Payments, compensation for WASPI women or the future of Grangemouth, the one thing we know about Labour is you simply cannot trust their promises.

“But the last week has just been the tip of the iceberg on Anas Sarwar’s weak leadership – whether on Grangemouth, WASPI women or winter fuel payments, Anas Sarwar has shown himself to be completely incapable of standing up to Keir Starmer and completely unwilling to keep his promises.

“People in Scotland are quickly seeing through not only this disastrous UK Labour Government, but the weak and shallow leadership of Anas Sarwar – and with the most recent opinion poll showing Labour only one seat ahead of finishing in fifth place, it is no wonder he is becoming desperate.

“But as Starmer continues to fail Scotland and Sarwar continues to flounder, the question is how much longer Labour MSPs will put up with a leader who clearly has nothing to offer.

“In contrast, under John Swinney the SNP are getting on with the job of delivering progress for Scotland – renewing our NHS, lifting children out of poverty and growing our economy.”
