Inverness has been crowned the top city in Scotland for outdoor enthusiasts, confirming what locals and visitors have long known.

The latest study by train company LNER placed the Highland capital at the top of the table after analysing 71 towns and cities across England and Scotland.

Researchers rated each location on five key themes: family-friendliness, sustainability, culture, outdoor experiences and food.

Inverness soared above the rest for its breathtaking outdoor opportunities.

City Leader Councillor Ian Brown welcomed the news with pride.

“Inverness has always been the gateway to the Highlands,” he said.

“Visitors from across the UK and beyond come here knowing they can step straight into some of Scotland’s most iconic landscapes.

“From paddling on the mysterious waters of Loch Ness to cycling through scenic routes that stretch deep into the Highlands, or walking world-class trails like the Great Glen Way, Inverness offers adventure at every turn.”

But it is not only the vast Highland wilderness that draws people in.

The city itself offers pockets of natural beauty, calm and reflection.

The peaceful Merkinch Local Nature Reserve, the leafy Ness Islands and the colourful Inverness Botanic Gardens, which recently celebrated 30 years, are all treasured parts of the city’s green heart.

“This unique blend of stunning scenery, rich culture and our famous Highland welcome is what makes Inverness so special,” said Councillor Brown.

Councillor Ken Gowans, Chair of the Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, said national recognition of the city’s outdoor credentials was richly deserved.

“It is wonderful to see Inverness recognised for what we have always known,” he said.

“Sustainability, natural beauty and a wealth of experiences make this city a magnet for visitors who want to experience Scotland at its very best.”

He also pointed to the city’s future plans, highlighting the eagerly anticipated Inverness Castle Experience.

“The Inverness Castle Experience will offer an immersive journey through Highland life, celebrating the Spirit of the Highlands with powerful storytelling, exhibits and hands-on experiences,” said Councillor Gowans.

“It will also serve as a launchpad, encouraging visitors to explore every corner of the Highlands.”

The ambitious project is being backed by £30 million in funding from the Scottish and UK governments, The Highland Council, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and other partners.

David Flesher, Commercial Director at LNER, said the study aimed to help travellers cut through the noise when planning their next getaway.

“When you are deciding where to go, it can be hard to know what a city truly offers, especially if you are looking for something unique,” he said.

“This research gives people confidence to discover places like Inverness, whether for a short break or a longer adventure.”
