Inverness to Mark Armed Forces Week With Flag Raising Ceremony

Inverness will officially mark the start of Armed Forces Week with a flag raising ceremony at the Inverness Castle Experience later this month.

The event, led by the Provost of Inverness, will take place on Monday 22 June on the Castle Experience esplanade and forms part of a nationwide programme of events recognising the contribution of serving personnel, veterans, reservists, cadets and military families.

Armed Forces Week culminates with Armed Forces Day on Saturday 27 June, when communities across the UK come together to recognise the work and sacrifices made by members of the Armed Forces community.

As part of the commemorations, Armed Forces Day flags will be raised at locations across the country, including Inverness Town House and Highland Council Headquarters on Glenurquhart Road.

Provost of Inverness and Area, Councillor Glynis Campbell Sinclair, said:

“We’re supporting Armed Forces Day to show our appreciation for the brave men and women who put their country before themselves to protect our way of life.

“This is a chance for us to show our support for the Armed Forces community: from currently serving personnel to Service Families, veterans, and cadets.

“We will honour our armed forces on the 22 June at Inverness Castle Experience with this simple flag raising ceremony to recognise the work that they do protecting our communities and country.

“Highland Council continues to support the Armed Forces through its lead role within the Armed Forces Covenant which is a commitment and demonstration of our support alongside our Partners, to our Armed Forces Community.”

The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10.45am outside the main entrance to the Inverness Castle Experience, weather permitting.

A formal welcome from the Provost will take place at 10.50am before a blessing is delivered by Rev John Cuthbert.

The Armed Forces Day flag will then be raised at 10.55am.

Several standards will be on parade during the event, including representatives from the Inverness Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland and local cadet organisations.

The annual week of recognition offers communities an opportunity to acknowledge the contribution made by those who serve, have served, and continue to support the Armed Forces throughout the Highlands and across the country.
