Pupils from Sound Primary School have helped launch a new campaign across Lerwick aimed at raising awareness about dog fouling and encouraging responsible behaviour from dog owners.
The campaign follows long standing concerns raised by Lerwick Community Council about dog fouling in public areas.
Over recent months, senior pupils at Sound Primary School have worked alongside the Shetland Islands CouncilEnvironmental Health Team and the Shetland Community Benefit Fund to develop the project.
Pupils took part in educational sessions exploring the environmental and health risks linked to dog fouling before creating their own poster designs to deliver clear public messages.
More than 70 designs were produced by pupils with seven final artworks selected for use across the town.
Local graphic design company Art Machine helped transform the designs into outdoor posters.
Young people from the Bridges youth project and the council’s Estate Operations team also helped prepare and install the finished display boards at locations throughout Lerwick.
Louise Moar said:
“We were delighted to collaborate with Sound Primary School to produce posters that are now displayed throughout the community.
“The children were highly engaged and enthusiastic, and the standard of artwork they created was exceptional.
“It was a real challenge to select the final designs and we hope they will make a positive impact locally.”
The project combines education, creativity and community involvement while giving young people a direct role in improving their local environment.
