MSP for the Highlands and Islands Emma Roddick has highlighted the lack of opportunities for young people in the region to find their own home.
It comes amid a housing crisis in the region, which has seen low levels of properties available for rent, coupled with an increase in rent prices, making it unaffordable for many.
Commenting, Emma said:
“It has become near impossible for young people in the region to move out of their family home, let alone to buy a home in the community they grew up in.
“We know that this is an issue of availability, with so many second and holiday homes in the Highlands, but it is also a result of the Tory-made cost-of-living crisis, which means young people just can’t afford to rent, let alone buy.
“Due to this, we are seeing an increase in the number of people who are homeless at home.
“We need to continue to build more homes in areas across the region, not just in suburbs, but we also need to ensure they are affordable and are available for our young people who want to continue to live in the Highlands.”
