Maree Todd, MSP for Caithness, Sutherland & Ross, has celebrated the opening of the new Post Office in Ullapool Tesco, commending the local community for their efforts in securing a sustainable solution.

The Ullapool Post Office temporarily closed on the 29th of March, following the resignation of the postmaster.

A temporary service was introduced on 8 April, with Dingwall Post Office providing a mobile van in the village one morning each week.

Following a community campaign, backed by the MSP and then-MP Ian Blackford, a solution was reached to reopen the Post Office within Ullapool Tesco.

Commenting, Maree Todd MSP:

“After many months of hard work, Ullapool now has a permanent Post Office located within the local Tesco – the result of a determined community campaign to ensure Ullapool retained this essential service.

“I was pleased to work alongside the community, with support from my former colleague Ian Blackford, to secure a reliable and sustainable solution for the area.”

Maree Todd adds:

“Too often, our rural communities face a loss or downgrade of essential services.

“The closure of the Post Office back in March had a significant impact on Ullapool.

“While a mobile van provided weekly service, it was unable to meet the postal needs of the community and local businesses.

“It’s essential that we find long-term solutions to safeguard rural Post Office services.

“The closure of physical branches can lead to social isolation, reduce access to important resources, and harm local businesses.

“The UK Government must step up and introduces legislation to ensure that postal services in rural areas are protected.”
