As people across Scotland prepare for holidays, day trips and time outdoors, NHS 24 is encouraging the public to take a few simple steps to stay healthy and avoid common summer health problems.
The advice forms part of the latest phase of NHS 24’s seasonal health campaign, which is urging people to remember three simple words this summer: Pack, Plan and Protect.
The campaign aims to help people avoid preventable health issues that can quickly disrupt holidays, family days out and summer activities.
NHS 24 says many seasonal health problems can be avoided with a little preparation before leaving home.
The first step is to pack any essential medication, particularly repeat prescriptions, before travelling.
Whether heading abroad, taking a staycation or simply spending a night away from home, forgetting medication can create unnecessary difficulties and potentially lead to health complications.
The second message is to plan ahead by keeping simple remedies at home for common summer complaints such as hay fever, insect bites, stings and sunburn.
Warm weather often brings an increase in minor health concerns that can usually be managed safely with basic treatments and advice.
The final message is to protect yourself and others during periods of hot weather.
Health professionals are reminding people to seek shade, wear suitable sun protection and stay hydrated when temperatures rise.
Particular care should be taken with young children, older people and those living with existing health conditions, as they can be more vulnerable to the effects of hot weather.
Dr Siama Latif, Associate Medical Director at NHS 24, said:
“Summer is a time when many of us are travelling, spending more time outdoors, or enjoying a break from our usual routines.
“While that’s good for our wellbeing, it can also bring an increased risk of things like sunburn, insect bites, allergies, and minor injuries.
“Forgetting medication, not having simple remedies at home, or spending too long in the sun can quickly lead to problems.
“Especially for young children, older people, and those with existing conditions.”
The campaign also highlights the support available through NHS 24’s services, including NHS inform and the NHS 111 service.
Dr Siama Latif said:
“Our dedicated teams are always available if you need urgent care, but taking a few simple steps to pack, plan and protect can make a real difference and help you stay well.
“And if you do need advice, remember NHS inform can be easily accessed to help you get trusted and accurate NHS advice online quickly.”
With schools preparing to break up for the summer and many families planning holidays, NHS 24 hopes the simple Pack, Plan and Protect message will help people make the most of the months ahead while staying safe and well.
