The third Orkney Careers Fair, held earlier this month at the Pickaquoy Centre, proved to be another resounding success, drawing in over 900 attendees from across the county.

More than 550 pupils from S4-S6 at Stromness Academy and Kirkwall Grammar School, as well as S3-S4 pupils from Stronsay, Sanday, and Westray Junior High Schools, attended the event.

The fair offered them a valuable opportunity to explore career, education, and training options both locally and beyond.

Thirteen senior pupils from Farr High School in Bettyhill also made the trip across the Firth to join the gathering, broadening the event’s reach.

With 64 stands and 76 exhibitors, the fair provided a comprehensive overview of the opportunities available in various sectors.

Local employers, educational institutions, and training providers were on hand to share insights about the careers in their industries, offering practical advice on the training and education required to enter these fields.

Employers not only highlighted career paths within their sectors but also offered young people valuable guidance on the skills they seek in potential employees.

They helped pupils understand what work-based learning options, apprenticeships, or placements were available, providing a real-world glimpse into their future prospects.

Visitors also had the chance to meet representatives from universities and colleges, who tailored advice on courses that could lead them into the careers they were interested in.

In a thoughtful new addition to this year’s fair, a Quiet/Relaxed session was introduced for those who preferred a calmer environment.

Over 100 people attended this quieter session, including several school pupils and students from UHI Orkney, who appreciated the chance to explore their options in a more relaxed setting.

Co-hosted by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Orkney and Skills Development Scotland, the event earned high praise from both exhibitors and attendees.

Local businesses and national organisations alike were impressed with the engagement shown by the young people, who eagerly asked questions and took full advantage of the resources on offer.

Exhibitors came from a range of sectors, including agriculture, aquaculture, construction, creative industries, food production, healthcare, IT, and the public sector.

They included both local businesses and major national employers, such as the armed forces and emergency services.

The Orkney Careers Fair is fast becoming a key event for anyone considering their future.

Thanks to everyone who participated—whether as an exhibitor or a visitor—the fair once again delivered on its promise to help young people identify their next steps and choose the pathway that best suits their skills and aspirations.
