Residents and businesses in Orkney are being urged to take part in a national consultation on flood risk management before it closes on 22 April.

Orkney Islands Council is encouraging people across the islands to share their experiences as part of the Scottish Environment Protection Agency consultation, which will shape flood planning between 2028 and 2034.

The consultation will inform a dedicated Flood Risk Management Plan for Orkney, reflecting the islands’ exposure to surface water, coastal and watercourse flooding.

Orkney accounts for around 6 per cent of Scotland’s coastline, placing it among the areas most affected by rising flood risks.

Across Scotland, around 400,000 homes, businesses and services are currently at medium risk of flooding, with that figure expected to rise significantly as the climate changes.

The consultation focuses on gathering local insight to better understand flooding issues and guide future investment and planning.

It also seeks input on existing projects and actions already helping to manage flood risk in communities.

“Flood risk in Scotland is increasing as our climate changes, and many communities are already experiencing the effects.

“The National Flood Risk Assessment published last year shows why it’s so important to plan ahead and work together to reduce the impacts of flooding.

“This consultation is about listening to communities and learning from local experience.

“By sharing concerns, experience and knowledge, people can help inform our understanding of flood risk in their area and support the development of flood risk management planning.”

The current phase of consultation is part of a wider process, with a second stage due to begin in December 2026.

Final plans are expected to be published in December 2027.
