An Orkney swimmer has claimed triple junior champion status at the Scottish Swimming Open Championships, cementing her place as one of the brightest talents in the pool.
Eve Wood delivered an exceptional performance at the Edinburgh meet, taking gold in the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke, and 50m butterfly events.
In addition to her victories, she smashed four Orkney records in the 100m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke, and 50m butterfly, setting the bar even higher for local swimmers.
Her accomplishments didn’t stop there, as she also broke Scottish North District records in the 50m freestyle and 50m butterfly, showcasing her dominance across multiple disciplines.
Fellow swimmer Alfie Price also made waves, achieving new Orkney records in the 50m butterfly, 100m individual medley, 100m butterfly, and 50m freestyle events.
Both athletes are part of the Performance Development Programme (PDP), an initiative backed by Orkney Islands Council and sportscotland, which supports aspiring athletes through expert guidance on physical preparation, nutrition, and lifestyle management.
Eve also benefits from the Athlete Travel Award Scheme, funded by Orkney Islands Council, sportscotland, and Stagecoach, which helps offset the cost of travelling to national competitions.
Inga Burton, coach at Orkney Amateur Swimming Club, praised the duo for their dedication and growth this season.
“Eve and Alfie’s results reflect their hard work and the benefits of a more tailored training programme,” said Inga.
“It’s fantastic to see them performing at such a high level nationally, and we’re excited for the long course season ahead.”
Eve reflected on her success, describing it as a turning point in her career.
“In previous years, I’ve struggled in this pool, so coming away with three junior titles and new records is a huge confidence boost,” she said.
“Having other Orcadians and Shetlanders at the meet also made it a really supportive environment.”
Alfie was equally proud of his performance.
“The competition was tough, but I’m pleased with my times and breaking more records,” he said.
Councillor Gwenda Shearer, Chair of the Education, Leisure and Housing Committee, hailed their achievements as a testament to the value of local support initiatives.
“The Performance Development Programme and Athlete Travel Award Scheme are making a tangible difference for our athletes,” she said.
“Eve and Alfie are having a golden year, and their commitment is an inspiration to us all.”
With the short course season now complete, Eve and Alfie will turn their attention to the long course season, where they aim to replicate their success in 50m pools.
The pair’s remarkable achievements not only highlight their personal talent but also underline the importance of community and institutional backing in nurturing sporting excellence.
