Overnight A828 Works to Resume Near Ledaig

Overnight works on the A828 between Ledaig and Benderloch are set to resume from Monday 15 June following a delay caused by the discovery of an active bird nest within the working area.

The works are taking place around two miles north of Connel Bridge as part of ongoing rockslope stabilisation improvements being carried out by BEAR Scotland on behalf of Transport Scotland.

Environmental surveys have been undertaken to ensure compliance with wildlife protection legislation, with a further inspection scheduled for the morning of 15 June to determine whether the remaining rock removal work can proceed.

If the nest is no longer active, crews will remove the final three areas of rock during overnight shifts.

Should the nest remain active, preparatory work will instead be carried out at a safe distance from the site.

The overnight operations will run between 7pm and 6am, with traffic in both directions held for short periods of up to ten minutes during safety critical stages of the work.

Temporary traffic lights will remain in place throughout the project to allow the works to be carried out safely.

Michael Baxter, BEAR Scotland’s North West Improvements Scheme Manager, said:

“These works are essential to ensure the long-term safety and resilience of the route.

“Carrying out these safety-critical activities overnight, when traffic flows are lower, will help ensure the works can be delivered safely for both the workforce and road users.

“We thank local residents, businesses, and road users for their continued patience and understanding while these vital safety improvements are delivered on this key route.”

The current phase of rockslope stabilisation work resumed in April and is expected to continue for up to six months.

The programme includes loose rock removal, installation of rock anchors and protective netting designed to improve the long term resilience of the route.

Further works will be required on the remaining section of the slope, with plans currently being developed by BEAR Scotland and Transport Scotland.
